My approach to working with clients is a special kind of treatment called cognitive-behavioral therapy. It is the preferred type of psychotherapy for working with anxiety disorders, as well as many other illnesses such as depression. It has been scientifically demonstrated to be at least as effective as medication and often with longer lasting benefits than pharmaceuticals. Cogntive-behavioral therapy also takes less time than many other traditional therapies to produce results.
I have also learned through clinical experience and research that our social support system, be it a traditional family, domestic partnership or extended family, has a tremendous impact on our well-being. So whenever possible and appropriate, I encourage family-focused therapy as part of a client's treatment plan.
